Screening night - Castle Cinema - 12th October

Sound in black forms of worship and rituals.

Films by Christelle Oyiri, Olukemi Lijadu and Wilmarc Val. Followed by an artist talk by Olukemi Lijadu and Wilmarc Val

Curated by Sandra Jean Pierre and supported by FLUXUS Arts Projects and not/nowhere.

HYPERFATE by Christelle Oyiri

A visual reminder of mortality that challenges the distinctions between ideas of destiny and fate, raising the question of how rap, often associated with stories of initiation and success, has transformed into a place where tragic heroes meet their demise.

COME AND SPEAK TO ME ABOUT WHAT YOU FELT by Olukemi Lijadu

In this work, the artist weaves together fragmented threads of Black music. Come and speak to me about what you felt is an exploration of the search for one’s history and how music can communicate feelings beyond words across time and distance.

GUARDIAN ANGELS by Olukemi Lijadu

GUARDIAN ANGELS explores the artist’s relationship with religion, informed by her grandmother’s study of African philosophy and Catholic upbringing.

BRAVE by Wilmarc Val

When a Haitian Vodou priestess, a Mambo, passes away, her children must celebrate the deity she served. It is time for the artist's mother to return to the homeland to perform this ritual in honour of his late grandmother.

Alice Grandoit-Šutka (Deem Journal)  presented Citational Centering and Scales of Relation: a directional soundscape and cartographic collage reflecting on a process of diasporic geographic knowledge production through somatic practices of materiality and re-spatialization.
The listening session was followed by a presentation of the works, a Q&A and a DJ Set by Sandra JP.

La Pharmacie des Âmes presented a curated selection of diasporic social and art practices-related literature.

Alice Grandoit-Šutka is a research-based designer, host, and publisher.
Over the past 15 years, she has developed an expansive practice that is equal parts experimental, referential, and relational at the intersections of the arts, architecture, community engagement and food.
Among these expressions, Alice is interested in building infrastructures for convening that open up our capacity to feel deeply and orient towards liberatory futures.
She is the Co-Founder and Editorial Director of Deem Journal, a media platform exploring design as social practice.

Sandra Jean Pierre is an artist and curator interested in alternative modes of discourse transmission.
Working primarily with sound, she explores opportunities offered by collage and spatialization.
As a member of the Haitian Diaspora, her work explores radical ancestry, forced empathy, and ways of bringing to light the colonial violence that saturates the banalities of everyday life. She is also the founder of MARASA: a curatorial practice exploring alternative mediums to create new systems of listening, visibility and knowledge creation.
